Danilo. Globalisation : an overview /
Danilo Zolo ; translated by Mark Weir. - Colchester : ECPR Press, 2007. - 98 p.
- (ECPR Press monographs). - Includes bibliographical references and index. -
In these pages the author has mapped out the main issues that are generally
dealt with under the term 'globalisation'. His reason for doing so, quite
simply, is that, with certain provisos, he believes this is a useful and
important term that is all too often subject to rhetorical and ideological
misuse. By analysing the concepts involved and clarifying some of the
theoretical issues, he hopes to contribute to curbing such misuse. At a more
profound level, the author would like to help readers make a critical appraisal
of the vast array of books that take 'globalisation' as a paradigm for the
contemporary human situation. Globalisation is often used as an extremely
general ordinative and explanatory concept, able on its own to give meaning,
whether positive or negative, to the current transition to the third
millennium. In reality, the processes involved in globalisation are highly
complex and affect clearly differentiated social spheres, including the
economy, mass communications, domestic and international affairs, ecology, law
and military strategy.

POLITIKA. POLITOLOĢIJA
32 Growing into Politics : contexts and timing of political socialisation / edited by Simone
Abendschön. - Colchester : ECPR Press, 2014. - x, 280 p. : ill., tab. -
(Studies in European Political Science). - Includes bibliographical references
and index. - This book presents up-to-date empirical research on crucial
questions of political socialisation. It suggests new approaches and answers to
a classic, but still valid question of political socialisation research: ‘Who
learns what from whom, under what circumstances, and with what effects?’
(Greenstein 1965: 13). The volume maintains that political socialisation is no
universal or independent phenomenon, but one significantly shaped by the
surrounding parameters of the society in which it is embedded. Therefore,
deficits in political socialisation research have become especially clear in
light of political and societal changes over recent decades. The book
contributes to two important discussions in the study of political
socialisation: first, the question of the (relative) importance of
socialisation agents and contexts, second – inextricably interwoven with the
first – the timing of political socialisation. From a European perspective, articles
in the volume shed light on old problems and topics of the field, using new
methodological approaches or dealing with long-neglected perspectives such as
young children’s democratic learning or political socialisation. Includes
quantitative approaches as well as innovative and explorative case studies.

Gianfranco. Varieties of Political Experience : power phenomena in modern society / Gianfranco Poggi. - Colchester
: ECPR Press, 2014. - xii, 188 p. - (ECPR Press Essays). - Includes
bibliographical references and index. - The management of contemporary public
affairs involves many different centres of social power, engaged in complex and
mutable relations, ranging from willing cooperation, to competition, to
out-and-out conflict. This book emphasises the role played in these relations
by political institutions in particular. Generally, these claim a special
competence to authorise and regulate the activities of other institutions, but
their claim is often contested by other power centres, serving different and
sometimes contrasting interests. To explore those processes, the author, after
identifying the nature of ‘the political’, considers its dealings with other
forms of social power. Among these, economic power gets particular attention,
in view of the contemporary salience of the ‘state vs market’ issue. But this
book also considers the relations between politics at one end, and law, the
public sphere, citizenship, and religion at the other.

Geraint. Political Elites / Geraint
Parry. - with a new introduction by the author. - Colchester : ECPR Press,
2005. - 152 p. - (ECPR Press Classics). - Includes bibliographical references
and index. - Elites have been described both as the bulwarks of democracy and
its very antithesis. 'Political Elites', first published in 1969, reviews the
literature on the role of elites in politics. It deals with both the 'classic'
elite theorists - Mosca, Pareto, Michels, Burnham and C. Wright Mills - and
with many of the empirical and theoretical works on elites by modern political
scientists and sociologists. It seeks to clarify the central terms of elite
discourse, some of which have entered the everyday political vocabulary -
'elitism', 'power elite', 'establishment', 'elite consensus'' , 'iron law of
oligarchy' and 'mass'. It explores the ways in which the descriptions of power
relationships can subtly be infiltrated by the values of the observers. For
this ECPR Classics edition Professor Parry has added an introduction reviewing
significant new developments in elite political science., Originally published:

: ill. - (ECPR Press Monographs). - Includes bibliographical references and
index. - Schools of Democracy offers a vivid analysis of the long-term impact
of engagement in participatory budgeting institutions in Europe. While
democratic innovations flourish around the world, there have been great hopes
for their potential to revitalize representative government and solve the
increasing apathy of the public. Based on a rich ethnographic study in France,
Italy and Spain, this book shows how participatory institutions can encourage
personal involvement, by creating the procedural and social conditions
conducive to the formation of a competent and involved citizenry. Rather than
deliberation itself, it seems that informal discussions and interactions between
a diverse public allow mutual learning and the beginning of a political
trajectory for people at the margins of the public sphere. However, this book
also shows that citizens can become disappointed by the little decision-making
power they are granted, as they leave the process often more cynical than bef.

323 Killingsworth,
Matt. Civil Society in Communist Eastern
Europe : opposition and dissent in totalitarian regimes / Matt Killingsworth. -
Colchester : ECPR Press, 2012. - x, 173 p. - (ECPR Press Monographs). -
Includes bibliographical references and index. - As well as promoting debates
about liberal democracy, the dramatic events of 1989 also bought forth a
powerful revival in the interest of the notion of civil society. This revival
was reflected mainly in two broad tracts of literature. The first focused
primarily on events surrounding the Solidarity movement in Poland and the
tumultuous events of 1980-81. The second was concerned with the Velvet
Revolutions more broadly. Following the events of 1989, there appeared a number
of works sharing the common central argument that civil society played a key
role in the overthrow of these Communist regimes in 1989. Killingsworth's book
presents three broad arguments, all of which reject the way civil society has
been applied in the analysis of opposition and dissent in totalitarian
Czechoslovakia, the GDR and Poland. First, it argues that the totalitarian
nature of Soviet-type regimes means that it was not possible for a genuine
civil society to exist. Second, the civil society paradigm, as it has been
applied to opposition and dissent in Soviet-type regimes in Eastern Europe,
lacks analytical rigour. Thirdly, the book argues that the dominant liberal
interpretation of dissenting opposition in Soviet-type regimes is both
politically and morally flawed.

Biela, Annika Hennl, and Andre Kaiser. - Colchester : ECPR Press, 2013. - xv,

and index. - Does the territorial state organisation matter for effective
policy making, and if so, in what way? So far, we know relatively little about
its effects on policy making and policy outputs. Starting from the hypothesis
that decentralised policy making has positive effects whereas federalism has a
slightly negative impact on policy performance, this book systematically tests
the independent and interdependent effects of different combinations of
federal/unitary and decentralised/centralised structures of decision making and
implementation. Based on a mixed methods design it first quantitatively tests
the relationships for the OECD countries in cross-sectional as well as panel
designs. In a second step, qualitative case studies are conducted for four
countries: federal-centralised Austria, federal-decentralised Switzerland,
unitary-decentralised Denmark, and unitary-centralised Ireland. The authors
study two space-related policy areas, both with regard to the decision making
and the implementation stage of the policy-making process: regional policy and
transport policy.

Walter-Rogg, R.Alan Walks. - Colchester : ECPR Press, 2013. - xvii, 515 p. :
ill., tab. - (Studies in European Political Science). - Includes
bibliographical references and index. - A growing majority of humanity lives in
sprawling, interconnected urban regions. Diversified metropolitan geographies
have replaced the centuries-old divide between urban and rural areas, and
transformed the local sources of electoral politics. The resulting patterns of
electoral support and participation have shifted axes of partisan competition
to the right. This volume undertakes the first international comparative analysis
of metropolitan political behaviour. The results support a powerful new thesis
to explain many recent shifts in political behaviour: the metropolitanisation
of politics.
